Resources & Support

If you are experiencing abuse, you deserve access to support whether you are ready to leave, have already left, or are helping someone else. You do not have to share your story publicly to ask for help.

Immediate danger

In the United States, call 911 for an immediate emergency if it is safe to do so. If your device or internet access is monitored, consider using a safer device to contact an advocate.

Domestic violence advocacy and shelter referrals

National Domestic Violence Hotline — safety planning, confidential support and referrals to local programs. Call 800-799-SAFE (7233) or text START to 88788.

WomensLaw.org — state-specific legal information and a directory of organizations and shelters.

211 — local connections to shelter, food, housing, and other community services.

Sexual assault support

RAINN — sexual assault support and information about available services. National Sexual Assault Hotline: 800-656-HOPE (4673).

Finding legal help

LawHelp.org — state-by-state civil legal aid information. American Bar Association Free Legal Answers and lawyer referral resources — paths to legal assistance that vary by state. When contacting legal aid, ask specifically about domestic violence, protective orders, family law, interstate jurisdiction, and pro bono representation as relevant.

How technology helped in this journey

In my own search for legal help, I used ChatGPT as a research and writing assistant: to identify possible legal aid and pro bono avenues, help organize a complex cross-state timeline, and draft clear messages to attorneys. I still had to contact real people, verify information, and work with an attorney who could actually represent me. AI is not a lawyer and cannot replace legal advice, and its suggestions need independent checking.

The people who helped

I also want to recognize the advocates, attorneys, family members, and other people who answered, listened, and showed up. For their privacy, I may describe what they did without publishing their names. This section will grow as I tell that part of the story.

About this directory

These links are starting points, not endorsements, guarantees of availability, or individualized legal advice. Services, eligibility, and contact methods can change. If you need urgent help, contact a local advocate or emergency services.
